Cannabis and Cramps -  An Ancient Remedy for Women's Conditions

Cannabis was used to treat cramping for a very long time. Digging into the historical records, we find that in ancient Egypt, Cannabis extracts were applied to the bodies of mothers during labor.  In the 11th century, European women used Cannabis to treat pain and swelling, by mixing it with lamb’s fat and applying it to their bosom.  Today, we call this method, the transdermal application of fat soluble Cannabinoids.

The historic record also reveals that Queen Victoria‘s physicians prescribed a Marijuana formulation to relieve her menstrual Cramps and pain.   19th century physicians in America prescribed various forms of Cannabis to normalize contractions during birth.  In 1860, a Dr. Wright documented that MMJ effectively stopped uncontrolled vomiting. Pickle juice was prescribed as well, and correctly so, as it has an excellent magnesium, potassium, and sodium electrolyte content.

“Yeah, it's terrible really. Little fucking minions in there hacking away with their teeny individual pick axes, tearing away the lining of my uterus piece by piece, basking in glory every time I let out a little cry of pain.”

Cramps & Medical Marijuana

A Cramp is a painful, temporary, involuntary contraction of a muscle.  Onset is sudden and normally resolves within a few minutes, but can last for hours.  Cramps are generally caused by an electrolyte imbalance that relates to dehydration, infection, muscle fatigue or menstruation.

Conditions associated with muscle Cramps include pregnancy, gastrointestinal disorders, kidney disease, thyroid disease, hypokalemia, restless-leg syndrome, varicose veins and multiple sclerosis.

An imbalance in intra and extracellular fluid electrolytes can cause nerve signals to short circuit.  Rather than relax, the muscle is instructed to continue contraction. Ouch.   Muscle nerve misfiring can also be traced to excessive insulin and low blood sugar.

Cramps & Cannabis

Medical Cannabis's component, THC, mimics a neurotransmitter molecule called anandamide that acts to normalize neurological function associated with cramping.  New non-psychoactive Medical Marijuana strains, high in Cannabinoid CBD, afford treatment to those who cannot tolerate strains high in THC.

A Canadian study reported that 92 percent of women who used Cannabis to for morning sickness, found it “extremely effective” in relieving their symptoms, including cramping.

Types of Cramps that Respond to Medical Cannabis

  • Skeletal muscle
  • Nocturnal leg
  • Smooth muscle
  • Latrogenic - surgical error / drug side effects

“And then, to cap things off, I got wicked Cramps and my period started... I guess my body decided that since I already felt crappy, why not throw some nice uterus-agony on top of everything?”
