Marijuana Benefits

“Research has shown that Marijuana alleviates Glaucoma. it is cruel and senseless to criminalize the doctor-advised use of a safe, effective, and widely available treatment.“

--  Francis Young,  DEA Law Judge

Eye Pressure & Medical Marijuana

Chronically elevated Eye Pressure is the leading cause of eye diseases such as Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration.

In these conditions, elevated eyeball fluid pressure impinges and damages the optic nerve and restricts blood flow, resulting in tissue damage that leads to optical dysfunction.  Over time, a loss of vision and ultimately blindness can occur, if excessive pressure is not normalized.

"Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. In spite of the diverse therapeutic possibilities, new and better treatments for glaucoma are highly desirable. Cannabinoids effectively lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) and have neuroprotective actions."

--  Dr. Tomida, Ophthalmologist

How Medical Cannabis Reduces Eye Pressure and Controls Eye Diseases

Cannabis has been proven time, and time again, to be a useful and effective anti-inflammatory for a range of different conditions. Many studies find that Cannabis reduces Glaucoma-related inflammation.

"Canasol eyedrops, (a liquid Cannabis based formulation) has been demonstrated to be effective in lowering intraocular pressure, and has also been shown to potentiate the effectiveness of other widely-used glaucoma drugs such as Timolol."

--  Dr. Manley West, Pharmacologist, University of the West Indies, Jamaica, Mon

Blockage of the fluid drainage channels  helped by anti-inflammatory agents, including Medical Marijuana that relax muscles that impinge drainage and control drainage channels.

Elevated eye pressure symptoms include, sharp pain, seeing stars, migraines, temporary blindness and visual difficulties.

Dronabinol and retinal hemodynamics in humans

"Cannabinoids, already known for their ability to reduce IOP, may result in increased retinal hemodynamics. This may be beneficial in ocular circulatory disorders, including glaucoma."

Effect of sublingual application of Cannabinoids on Intraocular Pressure

"A single 5 mg sublingual dose of Delta-9-THC reduced the IOP temporarily and was well tolerated by most patients. Sublingual administration of 20 mg CBD did not reduce IOP, whereas 40 mg CBD produced a transient increase IOP rise."
